give them that. we're kicking off this holiday week with a live concert from one of our favorites. low rider in the house. we begin with more deadly violence in the middle east overnight between israel and hamas. nbc chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in gaza this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt, it is not a good time to be a hamas military leader on the strip. they are being systematically picked off, killed in their homes, in cars, on motorcycles, many have gone into hiding, turning off cell phones, avoiding all usual locations. israel's war to stop hamas' rockets continued. with 100 strikes in the air and from the sea. hamas is still able to launch

homemade, iranian made rockets towards southern israel and tel aviv. there were around 40 new launches today. not all are hitting their mark because in israel there's a new national hero, the mobile iron dome defense system, proving to be the most effective of its kind in the world. of the thousand rockets israel says hamas fired in the last six days, about a third have been intercepted by the iron dome. in gaza, there are no air defenses at all, and israel appears to have superb intelligence, locating and destroying individual hamas homes at will. this four story house was flattened this morning. israel first fired warning shots at the building to give people a chance to escape, but the attack also damaged buildings next door, killing witnesses say three people. >> two minutes they destroyed all these houses. within two minutes. >> reporter: so that's not enough warning. >> no. >> reporter: nearby a police station was leveled. nowhere in gaza feels safe now,

and the hamas government has gone underground. this police station was empty when bombed. in fact, all hamas government buildings have now been evacuated, and all schools in the gaza strip are closed. but mosques are busy these days. they buried 11 people, including four children killed with a field commander when his house was attacked. he was the target. his family and neighbors part of that collateral damage. serious efforts seem to be under way to reach a ceasefire. the egyptian foreign minister is expected to visit here tomorrow and a source close to the israeli prime minister said he would prefer a diplomatic solution to a military invasion. >> thanks so much, richard. closer to home, start of the thanksgiving week and it is not off to a good start out west. al has a first look at the weather. good morning. >> good morning. this is a big problem for

travelers from northern california all the way to the pacific northwest. we're talking about what's going to feel like in a sense a hurricane, but it is really a winter storm, a massive one coming in. heavy rain, strong winds, and a lot of rain out of this system. you can see in the next 24 hours, the rain continues to stream in, and not just one to two inches of rain. we're talking about double digit amounts of rain, anywhere from 5 to 12 inches of rain, snowfall 8 plus in the cascade, inner mountain region. we have winter storm warnings, high wind warnings, flood watches, high wind watches stretching northern california to the pacific northwest, and it is going to continue right into the middle of the week, and it is going to be a mess both for airports and roads as well. matt? >> al, thank you very much. the president is traveling overseas to start the week, but hoping democrats and republicans back in washington are hard at

work on a compromise to avoid the looming fiscal cliff. so what's at stake if they can't? jim cramer, hose of "mad money" joins us. nice to see you. usa today put it very well graphically in their newspaper, we copied it, put it here. these are parts of the cliff, what make up the cliff. talk me through them. >> this is by far the biggest part. you basically are going to pay much higher taxes, $600 billion at stake. this is the toughest one. here, this is compilation, taxes taking people by surprise. >> if not adjusted for inflation, costs the economy $59 billion. >> social security we all knew this was a way to hire people. this is a sticking point. wealthiest people have to pay more according to democrats, republicans hate this. >> this will cost the economy $40 billion. this is where compromise has to occur. >> right. >> do you see it happening? >> no. this figure will not stand. somebody has to give.

the president has to give or the republicans because this is what's going to cause a recession, if we h have a recession. >> we should all mention this didn't happen by accident. this thing was created because of failures to compromise and strike deals in the past on the part of congress. >> except this must be so onerous, particularly defense cuts down here. this was supposed to be no bad, there's no way the parties would ever disagree about it. >> you say you're not optimistic. we heard lawmakers over the weekend speak out and say you know what, they think compromise is in the air and that they can strike a deal before we go over the fiscal cliff. why do you disagree? >> i feel there has to be some give. the republicans say this is a deal breaker, the democrats say it is a deal breaker. look at all these other things. how can that be the reason we have to go in recession. all these job cuts would be tens of thousands, 600 billion. >> you say the reason we would have to go into recession, some people say let's look at the dramatic side, say we go over the fiscal cliff. some people say that might not

be the worst thing ever happened to us. you disagree with that? >> tens of thousands of jobs, you make it so it is unlikely they get good unemployment benefits. next thing you know, people cut back spending. that's what it looks like. >> the famed investor, the fact that they, referring to congress and the president can't get along for the month of january, looking short term, is not going to torpedo the economy. >> that's great. wealthy person feels it is not going to torpedo the economy. you're in this group, you're going to cut back spending. you're in this group, you know this is about to happen. you're in this group, this is the group supposed to be hiring people. look at this. this group, i know they won't be that hurt, that's warren buffett's group. >> cnbc has a network initiative rise above. what's the thought behind it. >> there has to be common ground, not a leftwing, right wing, democrat, republican. this is avoiding recession, throwing people out of work, raising money steadily over time.

that's what politics is about. we don't want politics in this issue. >> we have to get you props more often. gets you all wound up. >> yes. >> catch a special edition of "mad money" 6:00 and 11:00 eastern tonight. willie geist is at the news desk. >> good morning. the woman at the center of the bombshell resignation of former cia director general david petraeus returned to her home overnight, first time since news of biographer paula broadwell's affair with petraeus broke, she and her husband hosted family and friends at their charlotte home. representatives working with the broadwell family say paula and her family are focusing on sticking together through a difficult time. according to associated press, a person close to broadwell says she's quote devastated by fallout of the affair and deeply regrets the damage she has done. the president is on a three nation tour of southeast asia.

chuck todd has the latest from myanmar. good evening where you are, chuck. >> reporter: willie, it was just a few short years ago this country was essentially isolated from the world community. now president obama makes this historic trip, becoming the first u.s. president to visit myanmar, country formerly known as burma. a rousing welcome for the president. a sea of people eager to catch a glimpse of the motorcade. uniformed school children waving u.s. and myanmar flags for miles. a red carpet welcome. mr. obama made an unannounced stop, a 2,000 year old holy site, center of buddhaism. a monk led them in a ceremonial pouring of water over the head of a buddha statue. then it was off to aung san suu kyi's house, where the activist lived under house arrest for years.

>> i would like to say how happy i am to receive president obama in my country and in my house. >> reporter: later, the president formally addressed the people of myanmar in a speech at a university where he justified his trip to this not yet free country. >> i sent a message to those governments that ruled by fear. i said in my inauguration address we will extend a hand if you're willing to unclench your fist. under the president, the desire for change has been met by agenda for reform. so today i've come to keep my promise and extend the hand of friendship. >> reporter: and the president didn't just come here to give a speech, he also brought some aid money, some $170 million, not a large sum when it comes to foreign aid, but more will come the president and obama administration promised if more reform happened here in myanmar.

from thanksgiving's true meaning, these hardcore shoppers say there's no better way to celebrate. >> we do it as a family, it is kind of like oh, we're not going to spend thanksgiving away from our family, we're actually bringing our family into this. >> reporter: determined to prove that good deals come to those that wait, no matter how long. and this is just the beginning. the store manager tells me he expects up to 4,000 people at this store alone, which may explain why miriam says the toughest part of black friday is trying to get out of the parking lot. last year it took two hours. matt? >> diana, thank you very much. if you spent the weekend stockpiling twinkies, you may have jumped the gun. they're likely to survive even though hostess is closing shop. we have more on that. good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning.

later today, hostess will have a hearing before a bankruptcy judge to begin the work of shutting down and selling off its assets, that includes everything from manufacturing equipment to the brands themselves, all up for grabs. hostess outlets like this one, the sellout has already begun. selling like hot cakes, across the country, shoppers are getting hostess snacks while they can after the bankrupt company announced they were shutting down next week. >> i don't know what i am going to do. >> i love twinkies. >> reporter: what's so special? >> creamy inside. >> it is a snack from childhood. brings back memories. >> reporter: sites like ebays are flooded with twinkies and ding dongs for sale at massive markup. there's online petition asking the president to nationalize the twinkie. >> it represents a certain

kelly. we should be learn morgue about the string of crimes. police arresting this man, 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks of san jose. they say he and a second suspect went on a crime spree friday night allegedly robbing four businesses within two hours. after those robberies, police say the two shot a man at a 7-eleven and tried to carjack him. that man ended up dying at that scene. san jose police were able to arrest wilbanks during a shootout with officers. the second suspect did get away. >> anybody who's willing to take part in four armed robberies and shooting at police officer, basically trying to kill one of our cops, is as dangerous as it gets administrator wilbanks was hit during the shootout and one of the police officers suffered minor injuries. police will hold a press conference at city hall along with mayor chuck reed and other city officials to update this investigation. right now let's check things

outside. >> we've got something to be thankful for around here, jon kelley. we've got rain on the way but it will subside by turkey day. 66 in fremont at that and 66 in redwood city. no showers in the forecast until tonight up in the north bay. that arrives at about 8:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m., mostly over sonoma and marin county. expecting quite a bit of rainfall between 2:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. then as we head through wednesday, the first part of the day clearing out nicely. so temperatures work out like. this 67 degrees today. we'll hover in the mid-60s all week long, clearing you out just in time for that thanksgiving feast. what are you serving this year, mike? >> we're serving up some slowdowns right now and then we'll see what else is on the menu. right now the san mateo bridge we did have an incident which cleared quickly. westbound your commute direction we see all this slowing that's the westbound flat section. the high rise also slow as the incident clears to the

peninsula. slow south 880 through the east bay. northbound routes showing some bogging down. northbound through san jose and the early accidents have cleared from 101 but still a slow stretch in that area as well. we'll have another local update in one-half hour.

can her marriage survive in the wake of her affair? let's begin with new details on the deadly accident between a train and parade float in texas. in a moment, we talk to a couple on the float. first, janet shamlian is in midland with more on the investigation. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the ntsb says the intersections lights and bells were sounding and flashing when that second float arted crossing the railroad tracks. the agency hasn't publicly identified the driver, but says they will be talking to him today. he voluntarily submitted a blood sample shortly after the accident. in midland, the enormity of what's happened continues to hit the community. long lines at blood donation centers and donations are flowing in. investigators say the flatbed truck carrying the veterans started crossing the railroad tracks, even though warning bells and lights were sounding and flashing. with information from the

train's black box and video from the train and a sheriff's escort car, the ntsb pieced together a time line. 20 seconds before impact, bells and lights activate the crossing as the first of two tractor-trailers safely crosses the tracks. 13 sends before, the crossing gates start to come down. 12 seconds before the crash, the second tractor-trailer starts across the tracks. nine seconds before, the engineer sounds the train's horn, and just five seconds before impact, the engineer slams on the emergency brake, but it was too late. the train slams into the trailer. first responders say by the time they arrived, the veterans themselves were already helping each other. >> for many of them, their training kicked in. as soon as they jumped off the trailer, they were able to help tie tourniquets. i couldn't have done it without their help. >> reporter: among them, tommy shoe maker, a special ops

soldier from louisiana. he was on the first float, but raced back to help. his wife said they were trained for tragedy. shane ladner was wounded twice in iraq. he and his wife shown in this video arriving in midland. both injured, they had to a.m. put at a time one of may's legs. dr. steven ray, a veteran himself was in charge of the emergency room as the injured came in. he said even though he's trained to put his emotions aside, it was tough. >> found a veteran in the back room, still there, he and his wife. they had lost everything they had in the wreck. they didn't have identification, money, funding. he was a paralyzed veteran. called the pharmacy, told them i would pay for their medications and take care of them. it was an honor to be there and to help the vets. >> reporter: on tuesday, investigators will conduct re-enactment to determine what the train engineer could see. meanwhile, five survivors are

still in the hospital, and four families are planning memorials and funerals for men that survived the battlefield overseas, only to lose their life here at home. matt, back to you. >> janet shamlian in midland for us, thank you very much. sergeant first class richard sanchez was thrown from the parade float after he pushed his wife heather to safety. they're with us exclusively this morning along with their attorney, bob potroff. good morning to all of you. >> good morning. >> sergeant, how are you doing? >> good. >> what's the extent of your injuries? >> my back was broken down by the l-5, and just kind of waiting to see if we can get the swelling down around the spinal cord so i can try to walk again. >> how much do you remember, sergeant, of the impact or seconds preceding the impact? >> well, it all kind of happens at once. there's not really any delay in time.

i remember it all from first time i heard somebody yelling train to the arm coming down on my wife and i, and then me pushing her, me getting thrown. i remember it. all seems to go by extremely fast. >> you say somebody yelling "train." so people on the float were trying to warn the driver of the truck that there was real danger? >> right. somebody behind us, if you think about it, the arms are coming down, my wife and i were almost past the train tracks, we were already looking off to start waving to the next group of little kids, but one of the ladies behind us, we were up towards the front, they were towards the rear, yelled "train" and i saw the crossing arms come down. caught them in the front of my chest and pushed her out of the way. >> heather, you know, your husband did push you out of the

way and got you off there. in effect, possibly saving your life. what do you remember from your vantage point? >> i remember the guard coming down, i remember richard yelling at me to jump and i remember his hands on my back. next thing i know, i was on the ground, and i saw my husband laying in a ball. i thought he was dead. he wasn't moving. didn't look like he was breathing. there was blood everywhere. he was just crumpled up. i started screaming his name and that's when he woke up. >> the tragic irony. >> couldn't move his legs. >> the tragic irony, this is a float carrying our veterans, heroes that survived conflicts overseas. this was supposed to be a day to support them, show our appreciation for them, and this happens, heather. >> yeah. >> is it hard to get your arms around that? >> yes.

>> bob, i mean, clearly according to the railroad this crossing was working properly, the bells were apparently going off as we've heard several times, the arms were coming down. i know you're going to take some legal action today. who do you hold responsible? >> well, you start out by knowing that you don't hold anybody that was on that float responsible. they were there to celebrate. this should never have happened, so you kind of work backwards, and there's reasons why this happened. it's going to take awhile to sort out all those reasons. one of the reasons it's obvious is the 20 second warning time is not a sufficient warning. you only have to go back to fox river grove in illinois in 1995, october, to know what happens when you have a short warning time like this. in that instance a bus load of children were hit. >> i remember that. >> this instance, same warning

>> reporter: what was once a rare event -- >> i have sinned against you, my lord. >> reporter: now seems almost common place. >> indeed, i did have a relationship with ms. lewinski that was not appropriate. >> i'm deeply sorry that i did not live up to what was expected of me. >> i have not been honest with myself, my family, my constituents, my friends, and supporters and the media. >> reporter: but what may surprise some is how many of these marriages have stayed intact. >> i think the marriages that survive are the ones that were not already in trouble leading up to the affair. >> reporter: ever since it was revealed that general petraeus, director of the cia, was having an affair with his biographer, paula broadwell, questions about the future of his marriage to his wife of 38 years, holly petraeus, have gone unanswered. >> you have to realize, these are people who have been together a long time. they have invested a lot. and she has a lot to lose, too, if the marriage ends.

emotional hell. some couples get to the other side, and they really do three difficult things. first of all, the affair has to stop. no contact. >> seems like an obvious. >> seems like an obvious, but people are attached. it's very hard to break that off, and the person who had the affair is grieving. they are having a loss, and they don't know how to end it, so that's very tough to do, and the spouse is not sympathetic to that grief. that spouse is filled with rage and pain and misery. the second thing that has to happen, that spouse has to be able to say here is how you hurt me. here is what you did to me over and over again, and if you did it, you have to be able to take that in and not defend yourself. >> the trauma repair, as you say, yeah. >> a lot of people are basically having ptsd, they are having

thoughts, a horrible experience and the other people wants to say, wait a minute, it's not all my fault. you didn't show me affection. >> that's not the time. >> that's not the time. we say fly into the storm of that anger and receive . it's very hard to hear how you hurt someone so people try to avoid it, and they need to have courage, and the third thing, also very tough. transparency. we advise a couple tell it all and tell it now. >> i mean, how much detail are you giving away though. here's what you are doing, you are avoiding sexual detail, but you are telling all the deception detail. yes, this is where i really was on your birthday. yeah, i wasn't really working late on valentine's day, and here's how much money i spent. here's the truth. that is an ugly thing, but it is -- it is so healing can take place later. since months later you said you didn't love her, and i just found the e-mail.

wolfe is here to get us started. jenna, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, matt. a bone marrow transplant is a major ordeal for anybody, so imagine going through four of them in 18 months at 10 years of age. this is a story of a little boy's will to live and his doctor's refusal to give up. >> whoa! >> reporter: brennan simpkins was born to golf. how old were you when you first started playing golf. >> 2. >> reporter: come on. the second of three golf-playing brothers with a lifelong love and talent for the sport. when did you know he had something special with regards to golf? >> 2 years old and had a perfect little golf swing. amazing hand-eye coordination. >> reporter: four years ago brennan got very sick. his local doctors decided to test his blood. >> the doctor called at 4:30, and he said go pick up brennan and take him to the hospital immediately. we've made arrangements. there's something in his bloodwork that looks suspicious. >> reporter: brennan was diagnosed with aml, a severe

form of leukemia that's difficult to cure. he underwent a bone marrow transplant. three and a half months later he relapsed. >> we had doctors to tell to us quit. we had nurse practitioners, experts saying let him go home and do the hospice thing. he won't have all the awful chemicals in his body but to him there's a quality of life in fighting. >> reporter: st. jude's children's research hospital was recommended. doctors tailored treatment to brennan and performed a second bone marrow transplant but after a year his cancer came back and a third transplant followed, again, the cancer returned. >> how scared were you when it was at the worst? >> very, very scared. i didn't know if tomorrow was going to be my last day or not. every time i closed my eyes, it felt like i was going to die while asleep. >> reporter: really?

>> yes, that scary. >> reporter: young brennan and his family had a choice to make. >> the doctor came to you and asked if you you wanted to get the fourth bone marrow transplant. >> and i said, yes, i want to get this over with, to get the cancer out. >> reporter: you didn't have to say yes. >> i did. i didn't want to die. >> he was talking about one of the movies that he's watching, a war movie, and he talked about it when you're fighting a war, give up is not an option. >> reporter: so once again brennan went in for a transplant, and for a while he was staving off the cancer. >> and i get a phone call, and harris said turner, things are not great. brennan is going into icu. they are putting him down now. he wants to tell you good-bye, and he had a -- they had this oxygen mask that just blows oxygen and forces it into his lungs, and i could hear him going i love you, daddy, through the stuff, and -- and i'm sitting there on the phone with the two oth guys right next to

him. trying to think, my god, i've got to say good-bye to my son. >> a turn for the worse but not the end for brennan. now he's been in remission for almost 19 months, with his health getting back up to par, doctors allowed him to return to the sport he loved. >> now on the champions tour. >> reporter: here at the tyco golf skills challenge in palm beach, florida, brennan got to watch and go head to head with some of his heros from the pga tour. while trying to beat cancer and hold his own with the pros, brennan imagines a future career off the golf course. how old are you right now? >> 10. >> reporter: and what do you want to be when you grow up? >> a nurse. >> reporter: you want to be a nurse. did you always want to be a nurse or just since you spent time at st. jude's. >> just since i spent time at secondhand jude's. >> reporter: brennan looks forward to a long life to match those long drives. this is the longest brennan has

gone without a relapse so his doctors are hopeful that the cancer won't come back. he does go back to st. jude's for regular checkups of the he has more life in him than anybody i know and such an inspiration to be around him, even for a short period of time. >> a nice story, jenna. thank you very much. marlo thomas is the national outreach director for st. jude children's research hospital. marlo, always nice to see you. good morning. >> good morning, thanks, matt. >> can i start with a question and i hope i don't anger some people by asking this, but brennan had four bone marrow transplants in 18 months. >> yeah. >> is there a point, and i hate to say this to the family, but where you say enough is enough? >> you know, how many is too many if it's your child, and we get children all the time that have been in a stage of treatment wre others have given up, and there is no standard care, so we create a new care. we create -- we're in the business of making innovative procedures to save children's lives, and one of those

procedures is to continue with those bone marrow transplants and at the same time that we're using natural killer cells so it wasn't just the bone marrow transplant. >> nikkolas robort brennan's doctor understood this was above and beyond because he asked do you want to go through the fourth lant. >> and it worked. brennan is now cancer-free. as you heard his father said, the other hospitals said take him to hospice. hospice or continue the bone mayoro transplant. it wasn't just the bone marrow transplants. they were also using the natural killer sells. we all have natural killer cells in our body that kilt infection all the time, but our doctor took out the natural killer cells from his body and engineered them to help kill the leukemia, so it's not just the bone marrow transplant. >> i mentioned back in the introductions the 50th anniversary of the hospital. >> yes, yes. >> one of the most startling statistics of what's happened in those 50 years, when the hospital was begun by your dad. >> right. >> cancer childhood career rates

rosemary clooney and i started years ago the elder statesman of the entertainment world said it will take you six years before you become a consummate performer, and it was a tough thing to swallow. we had a million selling record, but they were very accurate, so i decided to do a book to the young people tt want to get into show business or are in show business, just starting out, and show them that they are supported, and we -- we promote them and hope for the best for them. >> i like this idea >> and i like this idea because so many it seems of the young artists have one big hit and then they know it all. and what you're trying to tell them is, no, listen to other people who have traveled the road and gain that advice because it is invaluable. >> right. it is about longevity rather than just quick fame. >> some of the people, i mean, i was looking back at this, in five decades, six decades in the

business, you have worked with or known just about every major recording star. you have called most of them friends. you have performed for every president during that time period. is there a moment that still stands out to you, tony, as the pinch-me moment? >> yeah, it was -- you know, being honored for every valentine's day now in san francisco, it's tony bennett day, and they had a big, wonderful moment with 200 children at city hall that sang a song for me. it was one of the great moments in my career. >> the variety of people you have worked with over that time, let's talk about a few of them, first of all, you cannot talk about you without talking about frank sinatra, you call him one life.r greatest mentors and he just explain to people how he changed your life. >> in "look" magazine years ago, the biggest magazine at the time, along with "life." and he said for his money i was the best singer he ever heard and all that, and all of his

i had some favorites that i can get at the store, everybody has a store bought crust that they like. mix this together, and pure it in there. >> you want to move on, i can tell. >> i heard we had a lot of time. mix it together, pour it in there and bake it off for an hour and a half at 325. this is what it looks like when it's done. you can make it several days before and take it to somebody's house if you want or pull it out and you can eat it chilled or room temperature. >> may i? >> you may. >> what's the difference between a galette and a pie. >> this is the french version. so what you do is you buy puff pastry just to make it easy. buy puff pastry and take the apples that you cooked down. >> any particular apple that you like? >> i'm using baybern, a mix between sweet and tart but you can do anything you like. i put it in there. cooked this down with lemon juice, butter, cardamom and cinnamon.

manelli. there was a crazy red carpet. then frank and your kids, anyway, you walked inside and the place was buzzing. and once -- >> sorry. thank god for mary and laura. >> and the curtain went up and it was one of those things everybody kind of held their breath, this was happening. got on that stage, you guys, and sang like you could not believe. in fact, the guy from "variety" came from me after the show and said give her the tony right now. she's that kind of singer. >> and actress. she's extraordinary. >> look, there are lots of favorite moments during the night. one of my favorites had to be when liza manelli was my date. in the middle of the show, carol lee hits this crazy note, and out of nowhere, liza pops out of her seat, you guys, stands up. all i could think of is carol lee is looking at liza manelli

giving her a standing ovation in the middle of the show. >> middle of the song, happens a lot. really does. first of all, as i've said before, i don't think there's an actress on the planet who could play amy from 17 to the end of the show, and the roller coaster life that she lived. the whole cast is sensational. i just want to thank them. everybody says you must be so excited. you know what, i am. i'm grateful beyond belief i get to work with people like that every day. daddy used to say surround yourself with people talented than yourself and you'll look good. thanks to everybody that came and the best wish. we didn't get the kind of reviews one would want, we got some great ones, but i thought to myself, i can't know what's going on in the hearts and minds of people that come to the show. god bless them, they are doing their job and have the right to their opinion, but what i know
